gettin' physical

Charlie has been a very intellectual kid from the start. I'm not trying to brag, believe me, while I think its great that he likes to spend 8 hours straight reading I would actually prefer to mix it up a bit. I've been tying to encourage him to get a little more physical lately so when a friend asked if we wanted to do gymnastics at the YMCA with them we were all over it.

On his first day he got to do somersaults, run a little obstacle course, go on the balance beam, and do the bars. He had a fantastic time but he managed to cheat his way out of all the hard stuff.

When the teacher said 'hop like a bunny' he would do a funky little skip move which included one foot always being on the ground (he can jump with both feet but for some reason just doesn't like to).

When she said 'walk on the balance beam like a bear (hands and feet down, butt up)' he just got down and crawled on it.

When she said 'push yourself up on the bars, point your toes, and count to ten' he just sort of dangled there and counted to ten. The counting part = not a problem, the suspending your body while pointing your toes = required some effort so he lost interest.
.
So I'm not sure if he's just lazy or if this stuff is actually hard for him. My goal though is that by the end of the 4-week session he'll be hopping like a bunny through the obstacle course and walking like a bear on the balance beam. And if he doesn't I'll just sign him up again and again and we'll just keep trying because I really need him to like something other than reading books and playing Star Wars!
