I'm not trying to scowl at the camera. I'm actually trying to smile. Annie needs to eat every 3 hours around the clock. By 3 hours I mean from start to start. Since it takes about an hour to feed her that leaves only 2 hours in between to shower, eat, sleep, raise my other child, etc. I thought I was doing pretty good at keeping up with her demands until Wednesday when I took her in for a weight check.
She was still 3 ounces under her birth weight (at 3 weeks old that is bad, very bad). I met with a lactation consultant a couple days later and now I have my work cut out for me. If she doesn't wake after 3 hours I get to wake her up, seems cruel ah? I got scolded for joining Weight Watchers too soon and I got coached on my poor breastfeeding technique. Oh and I got duped into buying a $35 breastfeeding support pillow. Oh and my sweet insurance probably won't cover the visit so all this great information is likely costing me top dollar.
That's all I've got for an update. Life revolves around feeding the baby these days. I look forward to the day when it revolves around me getting more than 2 hours of sleep at a time. Until then the fog will continue...

Oh Jeannette...that $35 pillow is actually great if it's the one I was talked into (My Breast Friend, by chance?). I had to wake up Andrew too and it was so hard to do without a toddler to also take care of. I send you a hug and wish you well as you work your way through the fog... I love that you still find time to blog! Thinking of you and loving the updates. Hugs.
It is My Breast Friend. It straps on like a life ring so in theory I can walk and feed. Its great and not great all at the same time.
Keep up the good work Jeannette! Things will get better as you go along...you know, I am talking from lots of experience. HA HA. I hear the same stories from all my friends but good job with the breast feeding, they say it's the best thing for baby although I hear it can be difficult:)
There is NOTHING worse than sleep deprivation. I'm not going to sit here and try to relate to you situation.. because the "screaming baby" that keeps me from sleep is my work. :-) But just know that when you feel like you're losing your mind... and you feel totally disgusting, and down right insane... just know that there's a woman over in West Seattle (on some level) feeling your pain! :-) HUGS!!!!!
Your mother used to have a beer to relax and (I guess) stimulate more milk. It was an old-fashioned remedy that seemed to work and was approved. And when Grandma Hawley was a baby they made a "sugar tit" out of a hanky and a sugar cube.
Guess those methods wouldn't fly today!
Hope things get easier.
Much love,
Aunt Ginger
She looks like she is smiling in that picture, so cute! I too send you a hug...it wasn't long ago, I remember the every 2-3 hour feedindgs. I didn't have another baby to take care of though, so you've got me there. Take care of you, that is really important...the rest will follow!
i agree with Lisa - even if mama ain't happy, the baby looks pleased! i just want to drive over and help you and let you sleep because that picture is worth 1,000 words! here's hoping things turn around for you and the little one!
I was also told that my insurance most likely wouldn't cover the lactation consultant and it was better to pay cash. I said "i'll risk it." turns out it was a good choice since insurance paid all but $3 of each visit. Much better than the $40 cash price. :) Keep up the good work sister. In a year you will look back and laugh.
